2 out of 3 stroke victims have
NO prior symptoms or WARNINGS.
AND Your doctor cannot order an ultrasound test unless you DO have symptoms.
THAT’S why our screenings are so important.
“Ultrasound screening performed by a highly skilled vascular technologist can detect conditions which predispose people to life threatening strokes and ruptured aneurysms.

William B. Iams, MD retired Cardiac/Vascular Surgeon

“During the screening your technologist told me that I had a severely blocked carotid artery and I needed to see my family doctor very soon.”

"Thanks to your screenings we found a 90% blockage in my one carotid artery.  I had emergency surgery to fix it. Thanks."

Screening Information and Prices

1. Stroke / Carotid Artery Screening
75 to 80% of Strokes are linked to Carotid Artery Blockage.  Athersclorosis is what causes a majority of strokes and heart attacks.  This painless screening will quickly detect your risk for a stroke.

Carotid Duplex Ultrasound is an excellent way to test for blockage in your carotid arteries in the neck. Blockage in these arteries accounts for up to 75% of strokes. Such blockage can be treated, however, up to 50% of strokes occur without warning. It is hard to know if you have a problem without a screening test.

Carotid Artery Screening is simple, painless, noninvasive testing that takes less than ten minutes. We apply acoustic gel to your neck and scan the carotid arteries with sophisticated color flow Doppler Ultrasound. This technology allows us to clearly see these arteries to determine the presence of any dangerous plaque buildup, which can block blood flow to the brain. If there are dangerous blockages,
you will have information to give to your physician for follow-up care.

Purpose – the ultrasound duplex color flow imager will allow the registered vascular technologist to visualize the buildup of any fatty plaque in the carotid arteries that could lead to a Stroke.

Procedure – the technologist will apply an acoustic gel over both sides of your neck and use the ultrasound transducer to see the inside of the carotid arteries. The technologist will also measure the velocity of the blood flow for determination of the severity of the plaque build up.

2. EKG Screening to Detect Atrial Fibrillation
As of March 1, 2008 Prevention Health Screenings is excited to offer you a new screening available to help lower your risk for a stroke.   The screening uses a non-invasive electrocardiogram to detect an abnormal heart rhythm, which is commonly known as Atrial Fibrillation.

What is Atrial Fibrillation?
Atrial fibrillation (Afib) is a cardiac dysrhythmia (an irregular heart rhythm) in which there is chaotic electrical activity in the upper chambers of the heart (at 350-600 beats per minute).  This causes them to quiver instead of contracting in an organized way.  These electrical impulses then travel to the ventricles resulting in an irregular and usually rapid heart rate or pulse.

A person may notice no symptoms of Afib and may not be aware of having the condition until it is identified through a screening or physical examination.  Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Feeling of a racing heartbeat
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Fainting
  • Palpitations
Approximately 2.4 million adults in the United States currently have Afib and this is expected to increase to over 5 million by 2040. Afib is seen in every adult age group but the prevalence increases with age.

Purpose - People with Afib are at a greater chance of a stroke (about 2 to 7 times the regular population), and Afib is the leading cause of stroke.

Procedure - The technologist will apply 4 electrodes to your body; two on the wrists and two on the ankles.  Then the ECG will take a 10 second measurement of your heart rhythm.  Our physician that specializes in reading ECG’s will then analyze the heart rhythm to see if Afib is present.  You will receive the results in the mail at the same time you receive the results for the other tests.

2. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening

The majority of patients with an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm have no symptoms until rupture.

This screening uses ultrasound to view the abdominal aorta, the largest artery in the body, for a balloon-like enlargement. This highly hereditary condition is usually fatal if a rupture occurs.  AAA is the 13th leading cause of death in the United States with 16,000 deaths per year. There are 32,000 people diagnosed with non-ruptured AAA each year. Ultrasound in the hands of an experienced vascular technologist can easily identify an AAA before rupture can occur.

Purpose – to visualize and measure the Abdominal Aorta to detect an aneurysm or enlargement of the main artery of the body that could lead to rupture and death.

Procedure – the technologist will apply an acoustic gel on your abdomen and use the ultrasound transducer to visualize the aorta and take measurements.

3. Peripheral Vascular Disease Screening
Peripheral Vascular Disease in the lower extremities is also linked to coronary artery disease.

The most common test to detect significant Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) in the lower extremities is the Ankle to Brachial Index (ABI). It is a simple Doppler blood pressure measurement comparing the blood pressures at the ankles to the arm blood pressures. Our ABI test takes less than ten minutes. It is critical to detect PVD early, because an abnormal ABI is linked to higher risk of heart disease. It is estimated that as many as eight million people in the United States may have PVD. The most common symptom of PVD is painful cramping of the calf, thigh or hip, particularly when walking.

Purpose – To determine the ratio of the blood pressure in the lower legs to the arm blood pressure. An abnormal ABI indicates lower extremity arterial inflow disease. Some studies also indicate that patients with peripheral vascular disease in the lower extremities are at higher risk of coronary artery (Heart) disease.

Procedure – Blood pressure cuffs are placed around your ankles and arms. Doppler systolic pressures are obtained using the ultrasound transducer and an inflation device.

4. Osteoporosis Screening with the Achilles Express

Bone Mineral Density of the heel is performed using no harmful X-rays.

Low bone mass is a serious health problem in the United States. It affects approximately 28 million people over the age of 45, resulting in more than 1.5 million fractures each year. Eighty percent of people affected by osteoporosis are women. Osteoporosis is usually referred to as a “silent disease,” and it is often difficult to diagnose, because the first warning sign of the disease may be a broken bone.

Fortunately, this disease is treatable and preventable through early detection. Our five minute bone density screening uses safe, “state-of-the-art” equipment to measure the heel bone for low bone density. This test involves placing your heel in our bone densitometer which will determine your risk for bone diminishment. This test is very accurate and is FDA approved for men too.

Preparation – removal of your socks and shoes

Immediate results you can take with you.   You will receive a T-score, an indicator recognized by the World Health Organization, that you can take to your physician.

5. Pulmonary Function Screening utilizing computerized spirometry measurements of your forced vital capacity or exhalation
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, and it affects at least 16 million people. This noninvasive screening is a great way to detect asthma, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Our screening uses a spirometer to measure airflow and air volume. Treatment for COPD is much easier when the disease is detected early.

Immediate results that will tell you of your risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
